Tomorrow I Run- Tracking, Excitement, $7k and More
November 04, 2017
BENEFITING: Human Rights Campaign NYC Marathon Team
ORGANIZER: Human Rights Campaign NYC Marathon Team
I ran my first race of a distance longer than a 5k when I ran an 8k in March 2009. I added a half in September 2009 and my first full-marathon in November 2009. Now, nearly 8 years and who knows how many miles later, I'm thrilled to announce that this October and November I'll run my 9th and 10th marathons. My 9th marathon will be a return to the Marine Corps Marathon in October and for my 10th, I'll be doing my first race ever to raise funds for charity- the NYC Marathon on November 5, 2017!
I am excited to have the opportunity to represent the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) through the Athletes for Equality Program. Every day, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation works to enhance the lived experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people and their families by changing hearts and minds across America and around the globe.
As someone who believes in equality for all, I'm thrilled to lace up my running shoes and join the team to train and fundraise on the right side of history. Each dollar raised will improve the lives of LGBTQ people by working to increase understanding and encourage the adoption of LGBTQ-inclusive policies and practices. Our commitment will help HRC as they build support for LGBTQ people among families and friends, co-workers and employers, pastors and parishioners, doctors and teachers, neighbors, and the general public.
Of the countless ways in which HRC supports LGBTQ individuals and communities, I'm most excited to raise funds to support their efforts to have an Equality Act passed (to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in the areas of employment, housing, and more- in many places you can be fired simply because you are gay) and to support the basic safety needs of individuals and the community.
So here we go- how can you help me help HRC? In order to tie your donation into my training, I offer the following suggestion- put a monetary amount on each mile I will run as part of my training. Although I'll be running between now and June, my official training kickoff is going to be June 19th. Including the 9th marathon, which is part of my training plan for the 10th, I will run 520 miles as part of training. I am asking you to sponsor me at $1, .75, .50, .25, .10 and .05 per mile to equal a donation of $520, $390, $260, $130, $52 or $26. Other donations will of course be welcomed, but I think tying my miles to your donation will motivate and encourage my training. And although it doesn't give you any money back, I am going to put an added incentive on this tie in. For any runs I skip (excluding not being able to do because of injury), I am going to contribute that much additional to HRC. For example- if the sum of the donors is $8.25 per milie (which would be $4,290 for HRC!!), I will donate $8.25 per mile I don't complete in training- an added motivation for me to get up at 5 am, run in the rain and avoid any other excuse!
My goal is currently set at $2,500 but my hope is to bump that up to at least $5,000. I know there are a lot of great causes out there but I hope you are able to help me celebrate my 10th marathon by joining in this fundraising effort! I'll keep everyone updated (but try not to update too much!) and I look forward to taking this journey together to support the Humans Right Campaign and the lives of the LGTBQ community!
