Humes family food and shelter
Organized by: Jodi Humes
My name is Jodi Humes. I'm 22.5 weeks pregnant, and my family currently consists of myself, my husband Tyler, and our 15 month old son, Colton. We recently came upon some hard times. I left my job in February due to a difficult first trimester and attendance issues stemming from that. We moved in with some family, but that did not work out. As of 6/7/15, we are staying in a hotel. Our first week was discounted, so we only paid $224, but after this it will probably be upwards of $250 per week. This puts us at a $500/month deficit if nothing else comes up. Our savings are running out very quickly, and we need to get an apartment. We don't qualify for the necessary income level for an apartment here, so Tyler is getting a second job while I build up my freelance writing business (I cannot drive due to being legally blind, so it's extremely hard for me to find work, not to mention the cost of child care being something we can't afford right now). Any money that we receive through this campaign will go to four things: 1) covering our stay at the motel short term 2) feeding the three of us (we receive SNAP, but $209 is not enough to feed us for a month when we can only cook in a microwave or crockpot while in the motel) 3) covering our move-in costs for the apartment when Tyler gets a second job 4) diapers for my son (we initially used cloth diapers, but can't afford to wash them right now). I do not like asking for help, but we're looking at our options and just not seeing anything viable. Tyler had an interview with Wal-Mart, but he would have to quit his first job to work the hours they want him for. This would actually cost us money. Tyler is applying elsewhere, and can hopefully find a job within 2-4 weeks, but that's dependent on what companies can work around his hours. In the meantime, he's going to work as many hours as he can at his current job - overtime isn't always available, so that's not really a sure thing. I personally will keep writing, pitching, and querying. It took me 6 weeks to make $86, but I'm hopeful that as I build up a portfolio the money will start picking up. Any money that we do not use before finding permanent housing will be donated to the Marfan Foundation (I have Marfan Syndrome, and it's a cause I'm very passionate about).
