BENEFITING: OUR MILITARY KIDS
EVENT DATE: Oct 17, 2015
This past summer I was deployed with the US Air Force. My wife was about six months pregnant when I left and I was fortunate enough to see my daughter born through the miracle of FaceTime. As you can tell, my deployment was incredibly austere. Many service members are not as lucky as my family. Our Military Kids is a charity devoted to helping military children of deployed and disabled service members with a focus on the Reserves and National Guard. It is difficult to imagine the hardship the targeted families face. Either they have one parent absent or wounded, and the financial impact of a Reserve/Guard deployment often means families have a difficult time creating a positive environment to minimize the hardship children face. I am lucky my daughter is too young to remember me missing for a month and a half of her life, but seeing her for the first time instantly changed how I saw the world and how I sympathized with other military families. Our Military Kids is extremely well regarded and is one of the top military charities as far as donations going to the actual programs: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=12532#.VdPWcrJViko
I began training for a 100 mile trail race in March, right before I deployed. The hours of running gave me something to focus on while I was away from my wife, and I didn't have any intention of starting a fundraising drive for it initially. It wasn't until I got home that I realized simply running 100 miles is all well and good, but it is also pretty selfish. It takes a lot of time an energy to train for and that means more sacrifice for my wife. She is very supportive and wants me to accomplish this life goal. The birth of my daughter has made me see that the support she gives is especially precious and should not be wasted on a selfish pursuit. Please help me help a truly worthwhile organization devoted to bringing a little light into the lives of children with no say in the hardships they have to endure simply by being the children of service members who have themselves volunteered to sacrifice everything up to and including their lives.
