BENEFITING: Huntington's Disease Society of America, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 05, 2017
DAYS TO GO: 133
My name is MaryAnn Emerick and HD has always been a part of my life but I had no idea. My grandfather passed away before I was born and my aunt from Juvenile HD. My mom and dad split up when I was two years old, my sister just one. My mom wanted to keep us safe, and away from everyone, she thought she was doing what was best for us but that is where it started. She could not keep a job, was misdiagnosed, we moved more times in a few years than people move in a lifetime, but she always made it fun. My sister and I never knew anything was wrong. She made sure we knew how much we were loved every day. As she got worse, physically and mentally, she was finally diagnosed with HD. That day I will never forget, my world stopped, I went from 11 to 30 years old in seconds, little did I know then that HD would impact my life in so many different ways. My mom passed away about 5 years ago.
A little over 2 years ago I joined the NYA and found a place that I finally felt I belonged. My whole life I felt so alone, no one understood what I was going through, but that all changed when I met other youth affected by HD, that have become part of my family. My passion has become to spread awareness however I can for HD/JHD for my family, my friends, and the entire HD community.
I started working out for the first time ever about 3 years ago. Over the last year I have had a few injuries, some medical issues that made me not able to run but I was asked if I would run the NYC marathon for HD and to represent the NYA. For those that know me, I can't say no, I actually hate running, but love nothing more than a good challenge. I would and will do anything I can to help the HD community, spread awareness, and give hope to my family and friends. So this year I am running the NYC Marathon, with the entire HD community in my heart. I will be representing the NYA, and any youth that is or has been affected by HD. This one is for each of you.
And lucky me.. I know my biggest cheerleader, my mom will be right by my side the entire way. <3
Thank you to everyone for all of your support always <3
