BENEFITING: Huntington's Disease Society of America, Inc.
My name is Miranda Spencer. It wasn't until about high school that I had realized that Huntington's Disease was apart of my family. I grew up in a family that didn't talk about HD, so when I did realize, it was a hard thought to process. My grandma's brother was the first person to be diagnosed, but he passed away before I ever really knew him. Both my grandma and her sister were officially diagnosed while I was in high school. Its been a learning experience for my family, but it has brought us closer together and we fight together.
My mom tested gene negative in 2015 and that same summer we went to our first national convention, and it was one of the greatest, most memorable experiences that I've ever had. There I met the most welcoming people I've ever met and had the opportunity to learn about the NYA and meet other young people that are going through the same things that my family was. Since then I've been very active with HDSA and the NYA. Being connected to my NYA family has been so important and very valuable to me. Over the past couple years, I have had family more family members test postive, and some test negative, and I still have so many still at risk. I am very excited to have this opportunity to run the NYC marathon to spread awareness with and for my HDSA/NYA family. I thank HDSA for this opporutnity and I thank everyone for their support and encouragement.
We are in this together. We fight for eachother and with eachother. Let's cure HD!
