BENEFITING: The RIchard A. Neubauer Research Intitute
As you may have heard on the news, the US military (active and veteran status) is in the midst of suicide and concussive injury epidemics. A 2013 Veterans Administration study indicates that there are at least 22 service members who commit suicide each day , another 45 try and fail, every single day. Since 2000 there have been over 300,000 concussions reported by service members. The actual number may be significantly higher. “In 2013, an investigative multimedia program for journalism students, found that the annual suicide rate among veterans is about 30 for every 100,000 of the population, compared with the civilian rate of 14 per 100,000.” There is an effective, ethical, medically safe treatment available for PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injured wounded personnel and veterans, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). At this point it is private groups that are researching the results. It is not easily available to injured troops and the cost, which can range from $150 per treatment to upwards of $300 per treatment, makes it difficult for military members to afford it since it is not currently covered by insurance for brain injuries. Our Institute is actively providing service members this alternative treatment, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to help military members reconnect with themselves, mend their families and ultimately strengthen their own communities. We are trying to raise $45,000 to offset the cost and installation of a new hyperbaric chamber.
