I am the T: a trans documentary
Organized by: Tony Z
Hello everyone. Thank you for your interest in supporting I am the T: a trans documentary, the first documentary of its kind to showcase trans stories from around the world. With a changing political climate in 2017, it's more important than ever to bring trans stories to light-many countries still do not recognize trans people. In 2017, we want to continue producing our documentary by traveling to the Philippines to film a trans activist there who has been fighting hard for trans civil rights and visibility. Each dollar donated will go directly into our production costs by getting us to the Philippines, and by covering sound, lighting, and film editing fees. To see the important work we are doing, you can view our first segment, from Norway, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxjj41wdmXQ
DOCUMENTARY BACKGROUND: The idea behind the documentary was conceived in 2010 after I am the T's director began transitioning and realized that films featuring trans people were lagging in the media. After years of networking, planning, and securing a group of participants who want to tell their stories publicly, I am the T reached the point of production in 2014 when we filmed our first chapter in Norway. Since then we have also filmed in Canada, where we captures the story of an Iranian trans guy and a teacher living near Vancouver. In 2017, we are hoping to film in the Philippines. Our future locations will also include Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, Lesotho, South Africa, the Middle East, the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark.
DOCUMENTARY PLOT: The central plot of the film is to show that each trans story is unique and is contingent upon cultural influences, yet also united by the theme of overcoming familial, societal, and personal obstacles. The real-life stories of each participant's journey to become their intended gender will be showcased. This documentary will therefore shift the gaze from one that views transgender people as objectified abnormalities to a lens that humanizes and centralizes the trans voice.
WHY SHOULD I DONATE?: There are many reasons why this documentary is important. The most critical one is that for many trans folks around the world, transphobia and discrimination are still prevalent. Positive depictions of trans people are also still lagging in the media. Lastly, transition-related healthcare is not covered, let alone recognized in most countries.
TARGET AUDIENCE: I am the T is mostly targeted towards cisgender (non-trans) viewers who are unfamiliar with the stories of trans people. However, trans viewers will also gain cross-cultural insight into the socio-political and cultural factors that influence the effect that transphobia has had during each participant's transition. For non-trans viewers specifically, a better understanding of what it means to be transgender will be gained. This demographic will learn the difficulties that trans folks encounter during their transitions, and the ways in which transphobic beliefs create these struggles. The end of the film will leave a lasting impression: a desire to educate others about the trans experience and the impetus to fight transphobia.
PRODUCTION COSTS: We are aiming to raise at least $5,000 in order to begin the next phase of production in the Philippines in 2017. We will keep travel costs low by budgeting airline fees and by using our own equipment. Our spending will be transparent and well-regulated.
