BENEFITING: UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS FOUNDATION
HOURS PLEDGED: 832
Since 2006, Me and my colleagues at UDIG Dance Academy have acquired over 15 contracts through after-school programs in Memphis to fund our D.A.N.C.E. (Destroying Affects of Negativity through Creative Expression) program. 15 years ago, the guys that came from our neighborhoods that were as driven to recruit the youth as we are were gang leaders and drug dealers. Just as they called our native Memphis dance Gangsta Walkin’ and performed it as such, we have managed to take their inspiration and dance and filter it for the next generation to truly learn from the mistakes of the past, through us. As a result, UDIG has now formed a Chance 2 Dance University, a full range dance school, offering traditional and non-traditional dance instruction. We went from talent show hoppers to street dance legends to New Style Pioneers in just 4 years…….And now we are community leaders. Young…….community leaders.
PLEASE, IF YOU UNDERSTAND HOW BAD THE CRIME RATE IS IN MEMPHIS CONCERNING OUR YOUTH, GIVE WHAT YOU CAN. UDIG Dance Academy has set up a 501©3 non-profit, Empower The Youth, in order to assist in building after-school programs in Memphis for underprivileged youth. Besides our Executive Board leaders, The organization’s staff is 27 years old and younger, and most of them can dance very well, giving the kid’s very “cool” people to interact with. We have never made a lot of money dancing on purpose, and it was to ensure that this moment could be possible for the kids . They can carry on a worthy cause that is about each one of us and them individually.
Year-Round Youth Programming is decreasing at an alarming rate in Memphis. More importantly, performing arts is needed now more than ever to maintain the attention of students in Southern school systems. With success in the schools during the fall and spring, Empower The Youth can reach out to the parents for their youth to enroll in Empower The Youth’s Young Entrepreneurs Summer Program.
