Organized by: Hannah Gilbert
I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still, I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. // -Edward Everett Hale
Friends and family,
This semester I will be completing an "experiential" project to complete my Occupational Therapy degree at Belmont. For my project, I have chosen to teach a curriculum in the Athens, AL city schools that focuses on developing leadership skills in students, especially those needed to serve and advocate for others. I will be targeting 4th and 5th graders, and we will be discussing the differing abilities and traits we all have (including the topics of disability and culture), with a focus on discovering each child's individual strengths and how they can be used to help others.
As part of the service learning, the students will be raising money for wheelchairs for children in Nicaragua, which I then plan to purchase from UCP Wheels for Humanity. To read more about the amazing organization I've chosen to partner with for this project, go to http://www.ucpwfh.org and click on "Our Impact"!
The students' fundraiser will be selling T-shirts that feature a design hand-drawn by the students themselves. Here is the link if you are interested in purchasing one: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ACSmakeadifference.
Individuals in less-resourced countries have little access to wheelchairs, so acquiring one is truly life-changing. A child who receives a wheelchair may go from spending day after day lying on the floor or being carried from place to place to having an active role in their own life. This can provide them with new experiences, such as opportunities to go to school, participate in their own daily care, make new friends, and/or become more involved in their communities.
A wheelchair from UCP Wheels for Humanity costs about ~$250.
Donations received through this site will go directly toward the purchase of wheelchairs. You may also send a personal check to P.O. Box 1772 Athens, AL 35612 made out to UCP Wheels for Humanity with the memo: "Hannah Gilbert."
