Last summer I had the honour and privilege to visit Kenya on a volunteer trip.
Three words for this journey: inspiring, joy, and community.
I was inspired by the kind and remarkable people who live in the Maasai Mara and learning from them what life is like in their community.
I was energized by the joy of the many children we had the honour of meeting, whose smiles were infectious, and would always greet us with a huge, “JAMBO!”
And I was moved by the commitment of mamas who work collaboratively to create a better life for their children and their community.
During our days in the Mara, we witnessed first-hand how the five key pillars: Education, Heath, Opportunity, Water and Food, are truly interconnected to help directly change peoples’ lives. We helped build a boys’ high school, walked with the mamas to get water, met hundreds of kids at local schools, were taught beading and carving, trained with the Maasai Warriors, toured a fully organic farm that feeds 10,000 children a day, and met some incredible young women who are going to change the world.
The trip was an important reminder of how we all have the power to influence change and to inspire those around us. When you involve yourself in the community, you never know whose life you’re going to impact – and how your life will be impacted, too.
