Ian's Mind Matters
Organized by: Hannah Horton
Ian is 25 years old and in March of this year completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the Art Institute of Indianapolis, with a major in Animation. He's worked at Starbucks for the last 7 years, both in Chula Vista and Indianapolis.
Ian's extraordinary journey started on Friday, May 2nd, 2014 when Ian nearly
died from a brain bleed caused by a slow-growing benign tumor. (You can follow his story on www.CaringBridge.org) The tumor, which was removed May 14, was located in his cerebellum, affecting Ian's balance, coordination, speech, swallowing, cognition and vision.
After 3 weeks in ICU, Ian had 5 weeks of “medical boot camp” as an inpatient at
the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana (RHI). Now he is getting out-patient therapy two full days a week from 9-5, which will add Life Skills and Cognitive Speech group sessions to his individualized Physical, Occupational, Speech and Vision Therapies. He's regaining stamina and preparing for work and independence.
Thanks to the excellent medical insurance through Starbucks, most of the medical care and therapy bills have been covered. Ian was given a 6 month leave of absence and disabilty pay. But that period has come to a close and Ian will need to buy insurance through Cobra and still needs several months of therapy before he can return to work.
Ian just recently graduated from the Art Institute of Indianapolis and the last thing he needs is to get bogged down with tons of medical bills when this is all over. Any help at all is appreciated, so Ian can get back to his regular exciting life, and new career! Thank you to all for the thoughts and prayers… They are continuing to work!
