BENEFITING: HOPKINTON CENTER FOR THE ARTS
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2016
From 1996 to 2007, the International Business Ethics Case Competition (IBECC) included an academic/athletic biathlon connected with the LMU 5K/10K Run for the Bay. This made IBECC unique among academic competitions, because the point of the biathlon was to do some tangible good for other people. (The race donated its proceeds to a local charity.)
Once the competition migrated to different locations, the biathlon became impractical. However, holding IBECC in Cambridge lets us bring back the biathlon with a 4 mile run/jog/walk along the Charles River! In the spirit of our original biathlon, we are asking the students competing to help us raise a donation for the Hopkinton Center for the Arts (http://hopartscenter.org). Accordingly, we're asking each runner and walker in the biathlon to ask a few friends (5 would be ideal) to donate $5 for each of the 4 miles ($20) he or she will cover. In addition to the biathlon prizes, we will have an award for the team that raises the most. For more information about the biathlon, click here.
Believing that he should never ask students to do something he isn't willing to do himself, Professor Thomas White, Founder and Director of IBECC, is running the 2016 Boston Marathon the Monday before IBECC to raise funds for the HCA. As he's explained to the students, "If I can run 26.2 miles at 68 for a good cause, I think it should be a snap for people in their 20s to walk or run 4 miles."
