A couple of years ago I had the good fortune to meet Innercity Weightlifting (ICW) at the Root Cause Social Innovation Forum. I was immediately inspired by the mission of the organization – to reduce violence and promote professional, personal and academic achievement among urban youth. The founder of ICW, Jon Feinman, suggested bringing ICW students to Microsoft. We began the workouts twice a week hosted by my office in Cambridge open to all employees. Through these workouts, I have observed how ICW is impacting urban youth as they grow from student trainers to certified trainers. As I have gotten to know them, I have been exposed to another side of Boston and students society has given up on-- students who given the opportunity can thrive and build successful careers for themselves.
ESPN Sport Center was also inspired to highlight ICW on Sport Center: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=9537094.
As my career has shifted to represent Microsoft in Boston, the mission of ICW seems increasingly relevant. I am so proud of the innovation economy that is growing in Boston and I’d like to see all students have an opportunity to to be a part of it like the students at Innercity Weightlifting.
ICW is coming to Kendall Square this year and I can’t wait to work out with the ICW trainers more often. My workouts with ICW make me stronger, more confident in my crossfit skills and continue to open my eyes to ways that exercise and sports are more than just helpful to my physical well-being but important to our community as well.
In an effort to help them continue to grow I’m seeking your support. I hope you’ll donate to this great cause to expand the impact to more students, changing both their individual trajectory and strengthening the Boston community.
