In the state of Bihar, at a distance of about 15 miles from nearby town lives Ratnesh and his seven member family. Striving each day, the targets to sustain the family were huge. Empty lands hardly beckoned him and the efforts there were rarely fruitful. He along with his family was finding this vacuum difficult to fill. On suggestions from friends and family Ratnesh migrated to nearby town to work in a factory to earn a living. It was a long drudge into another life but few choices could be made. However even his most efforts could not garner sufficient resources to feed his family. The loans were increasing.
Ratnesh’s fight is towards building food security and economic stability, the linchpins for living productive and happy lives.

IDEI works with the vision of providing long term solutions to poverty, hunger and deprivation. In order to address above issues facing smallholder farmers and specifically reduce their income poverty, IDEI has developed manually driven water lifting devices (treadle pumps) which afford control over irrigation water to farmers. These devices are particularly useful for small land sizes as they throw out water with lower force than diesel or electrical pumps and thus do not damage the top soil in their vicinity. Due to the same reason the wastage of water reduces significantly with the use of these pumps. When compared with the diesel pump, a treadle pump is easily portable and can be fixed in various locations.
Till date over 900, 000 smallholder farmers households have adopted TP and about 5 Million people are enjoying lives of prosperity and happiness.
IDEI has brought affordable treadle pumps to farmers by setting up local supply chains to manufacture, distribute, sell and install the pumps. The pumps are marketed under the ‘Krishak Bandhu’ (or ‘farmer’s friend’) brand. The manufacturers, dealers and installation mechanics are all trained by IDEI and operate under licence
There is no recurring cash expenditure towards irrigation with the treadle pump which reduces input costs for farming and thus their incomes are increased.
Recently completed impact study conducted by IMRB concluded that, “the impact of treadle pumps in Bihar and Orissa appears to be much more profound. Treadle pumps are reaching significantly poorer farmers, who are hardly engaged in any market production, and enabling them to produce for local markets, dramatically increasing their incomes in relative terms.”
The 2009 Ashden Awards Case Study titled, Treadle Pumps increase income and quality of life for poor farmers’ states, “many farmers have bought a treadle pump as a result of seeing the effect of a pump on the income and life of a neighbour. The TERI survey, which studied three regions where IDEI works, confirms that the increase in income is significant. In Balangir, Orissa, average household income went from about Rs 9,500/year to Rs 25,500/year (US$190 to US$510) as a result of having a treadle pump, an increase of 167%.”
