THE STORY:

International Institute For Race Medicine Inc wrote -

The International Institute for Race Medicine (IIRM) was founded in 2003 as the American Road Race Medical Society (ARRMS) by Twin Cities Marathon Medical Director and former American College of Sports Medicine President William O. Roberts, MD. Its purpose was to serve the road racing community in North America as an educational resource and medical leader for road races from the 5K up through ultra distances. Dr. Roberts had envisioned that ARRMS would educate race organizers and medical volunteers preparing for and providing care at road races. It would also provide information to the public about health and medical concerns, such as how to hydrate properly and how to prevent serious conditions. Through education, ARRMS strived to prevent fatal occurences at races and help runners be more informed when training for and participating in races.

The organization then took on an international focus and was renamed the International Institute for Race Medicine. This occurred following the development of a partnership with the United Kingdom-based Matthew Good Foundation (MFG) to provide education worldwide to the medical communities who serve runners. The foundation, based in East Yorkshire, England, was created in July 2011 with its initial project aimed at education and research into the issues surrounding the death of its namesake, Matthew Good. He passed away in June of the same year while running a half marathon for charity. Matthew collapsed of heat-related illness only 1K from the race finish; he was 32.

Funds collected through this fundraising effort will be directly used for research to better understand the incidence of life-threatening conditions occuring at races and to further disseminate education to medical providers, runners, and the public.
