BENEFITING: ALLIANCE FOR COMMUNITY TREES
EVENT DATE: Dec 07, 2013
Hi, everyone. My name is Ilana. I'm 12 years old, and almost 13. I am getting ready for my bat mitzvah in a few months. As part of my synagogue's tradition, every bar or bat mitzvah must do a "mitzvah project" to help out the community. They can choose any kind of project they want, as long as they are helping out.
I chose to help plant trees. I love plants and I think that I am rather good with them. My name actually means "oak tree." I have a special apple tree in my backyard that my sister and I named "Ponyo," from a character in a movie.
When I first moved into the house, the tree was really small, and my sister and brother were not born yet. I used to climb up the branches and sit in a little ledge that was strong enough to hold me, and pretend I was in a little house. And now I'm too big to sit in it, but I still sit under it, and my sister and brother climb it. Every fall, it grows delicious red apples, which I like to make a pie out of.
The charity that I am raising money for is called "Alliance for Community Trees." They plant trees in cities, and I think that's important. Cities feel so stuffy because there's so much crammed into one space. Even though some cities have parks with trees, it doesn't seem like enough. If they had more plants in them, it would make people feel that it's possible to breathe.
I am also going to be making and selling cupcakes to raise money, but if you don't live near me or don't want cupcakes (which I can't believe is possible), you can just donate here. Your contribution would mean a lot to me. My goal is $500, and I know we can do it!
