In January, 2011 my Aunt Phylis passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer. To do something special in her memory, last October Dick and I rode in the 2011 Tour de BBQ. This event was one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced and a memory that will stay with me forever... 2,500 people riding their bikes through the streets of Kansas City to raise money to fight cancer. My team name was "Illini for Phylis” and all the money raised was donated in my aunt's memory.
"Illini for Phylis" will hit the 15 mile Tour de BBQ event again on October 6. All money raised goes directly to the cancer programs of The University of Kansas Cancer Center and Children’s Mercy Oncology Program. As you can see, I am more prepared this year as I will be sporting a Fighting Illini bike jersey (thanks Mom and Dad!).
Please check back for more pictures from training and the actual event. If you have the financial means, please donate to "Illini Phylis" and help in the fight against cancer. If you would like us to ride in honor or memory of someone close to you that has been affected by cancer, please drop me an email and I will add their name to this page. If you want to ride with "Illini for Phylis" go to www.tourdebbq to register for the event and join our team!
As the slogan from last year's event read - Cancer Sucks, Fight Like Hell!
* Congratulations to Laura June for receiving the news that she is in complete remission!
