I'm gonna have to science the sh*t out of this! -Mark Watney
Organized by: Tina Dinh
I would like to "science the sh*t out of [my class]." Unfortunately, I do not have the resources to do so. Research shows the best way to learn science is by doing science. Inspiring students through hands-on projects is key to piquing STEM interest and instilling a passion for science. (STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach.) I want to empower my students by engaging them in meaningful and authentic learning experiences in science that will simultaneously improve their reading, writing, and math skills.
Let me tell you a little bit about my darling students. I teach at a culturally diverse school with 20 different languages spoken. Despite the language barrier, science inquiry allow these students to be able to successfully complete, enjoy, and learn science concepts. The students come to school each day eager to learn and take charge of their education. They are enthusiastic to explore and try new things, and trust that their teacher will provide them with new knowledge and experiences.
My 5th grade students adore doing science, and I love teaching it! But to do it effectively, I need to educate myself which I have done through a year long science professional development and MONEY for teaching materials. I have commitment and passion for teaching but that alone is not enough to educate our future scientists. Each science unit of study (energy, chemistry, adaptation and heredity, earth history, and electromagnetic force) I'd like to purchase includes its own textbook, investigation workbook, hands-on experimental investigations, student journals, consumable materials, and interactive online lessons. I will use the funds to purchase as many of these units as possible.
Please help me "...science the sh*t out of [fifth grade]", and build a foundation for these zealous, young learners.
Thank you for your support!
