2016 NYC Marathon in the books!!
November 07, 2016
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
iMentor matches every student in participating high schools with a committed college-educated mentor, equipped to guide that young person on their journey to college graduation. The iMentor curriculum builds strong relationships between mentors and mentees with the goal of empowering first-generation students from low-income communities to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions.
As a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame, I share iMentor's belief that education is the pathway to success and wanted to join in their mission to provide resources to students in my community. I joined iMentor last September and was matched with a student named Ashley as she began her freshman year at Marble Hill. Throughout the school year we completed weekly online activities and met once a month at the iMentor events. Ashley's hardwork and determination at school have been inspirational to me. I love hearing about her progress in class and am excited to be by her side as she prepares to tackle the challenges of college applications.
The only distance running race I have ever participated in was a Thanksgiving 10K Turkey Trot in 2014. I didn't train and chose hot chocolates as my hydration method of choice before the race on that brisk morning. I learned a valuable lesson about preparation that day and vowed to avoid distance running from then on. That is, until I got an email from iMentor about their marathon team and decided this was something I must do. I am so excited for the opportunity to train for and participate in the NYC Marathon as a way to accomplish a fitness goal for myself and raise money for a program that is important to me. There are many parallels between the obstacles I will face with my marathon training and Ashley with her sophomore year, and this will be a great opportunity for us to discuss strategies and milestones as we work to overcome our challenges together.
I will be posting about my marathon training progress each week to keep friends and family up to date. The race date is November 6, 2016 throughout the five boroughs. Please donate to my marathon campaign for iMentor to support a program that does amazing work providing resources and developing skills at high schools to prepare first-generation students for college!
iMentor is excited to once again partcipate in the New York City Marathon! We will have five runners dashing through the five boroughs while supporting our organization. Running races in support of iMentor is a part of The iMentor Project, an initiative of mentors and supporters going above and beyond their mentoring relationship to support iMentor.
This year, iMentor is serving 3,500 students, our largest number of first-generation college students ever. Our team mebers will have the opportunity to raise awareness and support for iMentor, helping more students from low-income communities succeed in college and achieve their ambitions.
