What a month it has been. You’re probably feeling the same way I am – shocked, angry and wondering how you can fight back. And you’re probably as overwhelmed as I am by pleas from organizations in our community seeking help, and money. They’re all worthwhile causes, but I’d like to explain why I think Immigration Equality particularly deserves your support at this moment. You’re well aware that President-elect Trump (this is the first time I’ve said that phrase out loud) focused much of his campaign on demonizing immigrants. We are already seeing harassment of people of different races, ethnic groups, and those who speak other languages in public. Mr. Trump has promised mass deportations of undocumented immigrants once he takes office, and even those with legal status in the United States can expect to be persecuted by our government. We must fight back, and we must fight as well to continue America’s role as a haven for those fleeing persecution because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or HIV status. And we have the means to do this. Immigrants are still entitled to a hearing before a judge; Mr. Trump will not be able to replace those judges or change the laws governing their work for some time to come, if at all. At these hearings, immigrants who are represented by attorneys win their cases 60% of the time, as compared with 17% for those immigrants who are not represented. Immigration Equality represents more than 600 individuals and families in 39 states. We won more than 120 cases last year alone for immigrants who were LGBT or HIV+, maintaining a remarkable 99% success rate. Your support makes our life-saving work possible. Please give what you can. As an incentive, one of Immigration Equality's generous supporters has offered a matching grant that will TRIPLE your donation, making it an even better time to give. *If this is your first donation ever, your donation will be tripled. ($100=$300) *If you haven't donated since 2014 or earlier, your donation will be tripled. ($100=$300) *If you have already donated in 2016, any additional gifts will be tripled.
