My pal Ed began Journey: The Ed Colina Foundation in order to provide food, medicine and education to folks in Kenya. He visits areas in need of assistance and helps set up community programs that will sustain local programs after his foundation moves on to help others. In 2012 I helped raise funds to build and equip a classroom in one of Ed's preschool projects, and have been pleased to share his inspiring story with others.
In the past 4 years drought has devastated much of East Africa, including parts of Kenya where The Ed Colina Foundation has made connections with local folks. The drought has placed a heavy burden on those whose lives are already tenuous: the elderly, the disabled, and the infirm. Ed has started a feeding program for the elderly, especially those who care for their disabled and ill grandchildren and children. He currently feeds about 100 people at a cost of just 25 cents per person per day. Ed helps feed 100, and he knows more are suffering. Ed wants to expand his feeding program and I want to help him do it. Here's my plan...
I am a 66 year old who runs for fun and health. I usually run between 15 and 30 miles each week, depending on the race I am training for. My goal is to use my running as a way to raise money for Ed's work. I am pledging to contribute 50 cents for each mile I run to The Ed Colina Foundation emergency food program. I expect to run over 1000 miles this year. Those miles will provide the money Ed spends to feed a family of five for a year!
Runners, I'm hoping you will join me in this important work, and pledge your pennies (or more) to match the miles you run...and send the funds to The Ed Colina Foundation's emergency feeding program. Not a runner? That's not a problem! Bystanders, I hope you will pledge your pennies (or more) to match the miles I run...and send the funds to The Ed Colina Foundation's emergency feeding program. My goal is to help Ed feed 100 people...please join me in making this goal a reality. Thank you.
