BENEFITING: SHE'S THE FIRST
Gram, as many of us called her, was incredibly strong, smart, loving and patient woman. She had a sense of calm and sense of humor that was with her almost until the very end.
In one of our final phone calls, I asked Gram if she had ever wanted to go to college or pursue a career after she graduated from high school. Her response was very typically Gram, very matter of fact, but it was revealing and it crushed me. She said simply, "I wanted to be a pediatrician, but my dad didn't have the money and he didn't believe in that". When I pushed her to explain, she didn't have much to say, other than her dad didn't see any point in her pursuing school. Those who knew Gram know how bright and caring she was, and that she would have been a brilliant doctor. Trying to lighten the mood, I joked that she simply created her own patients instead, to which she laughed and agreed. But no matter her positive outlook and sense of humor, the world missed out on a great doctor and she missed out on pursuing her dream.
Funds raised by She's the First go to scholarships and other critical forms of support for young women in secondary schools across the world. These young woman come from families who can't support their pursuit of education, but through partnership with She's the First we can help.
To celebrate Gram, her life and the gifts she gave all of us, I would like to pass the reality of dreams like hers onto another young woman. Please join in the celebration!
