This fundraiser will soon come to an end. But this journey will go on for Russ and Laurie. We put a good dent in the amount of money it will See More

THE STORY:

Russ exhibits the epitome of the meaning to the words "...in sickness and in health." When his wife Laurie suffered a sudden, devastating medical disability, Russ became a determined caretaker to her. Now, we'd like to let Russ know how much we recognize his devotion and strength of character by making it easier for him to care for Laurie with a handicap accessible van. Here's why - Laurie suffered a massive stroke on the left side of her brain caused by endocarditis. This paralyzed her entire right side, caused a loss of the ability to breathe without assistance from a respirator, speak or understand language, eat or even taste food and control of her bowels. As if that weren't enough to cope with... As a result of the stroke, Laurie developed a rare condition called Heterotopic Ossification (HO). The HO causes the muscle around Laurie's joints to harden and turn to a very brittle bone-like consistency. It has affected both of Laurie's hips and her right shoulder. She can no longer sit up at a right angle because her hips are frozen at 35 - 45 degrees. Stroke "showers" from the endocarditis clogged an artery in one of Laurie's hips and resulted in death and subsequent removal of her Gluteus Maximus. Although Laurie was eventually able to re-learn how to breathe without the respirator, she is left with severe COPD. Coupled with a compromised immune system, Laurie has a need for frequent medical monitoring to prevent life-threatening infections. In addition, Laurie receives her nourishment of liquid formula pumped by a machine similar to an IV through a PEG tube which is surgically implanted in her stomach. In order for Laurie to safely get around, she must have a custom "Tilt in Space" wheelchair specifically designed to fit her body contortions. This chair is extremely heavy. Laurie is cognitive and aware, but becomes confused easily. Russ is her rock, her life is in his hands and he is taking that commitment seriously. Since Laurie's stroke on June 10, 2015, Russ has been Laurie's sole caretaker. Right now to transport Laurie, Russ must carry her down 3 stairs, across 25 feet of sidewalk and then load her into the car which is not equipped to even hold her in place. What is needed for Russ to be able to care for Laurie is a wheelchair accessible van with a hydraulic lift gate. Please join us in helping Russ in his devotion and care with a vehicle to transport his wife, Laurie to and from her appointments and gain more access to the community at large.
