Incite Isla Vista!

Organized by: Sean Nolan

A Labor of Love
Incite Isla Vista! is a collection of firebrand students, professors, and residents dedicated to the arts and focused on reviving The Catalyst Literary and Visual Arts Magazine as a vital and important force in Isla Vista and the greater Santa Barbara community.

Amid the largely negative and sensational events publicized nationally, a highly creative, thriving and lively culture has been overshadowed at UCSB and in the adjacent community of Isla Vista. This culture has been a constant feature throughout our town's history but since 2007 has lacked an outlet to exhibit and uplift it. This is where The Catalyst comes in.

The first issue of the revived Catalyst (defunct since 2007) came out in the Winter Quarter of the 2013-2014 school year. In seventy-five colored pages, the inaugural issue collected poetry, short stories, critical essays, and creative non-fiction, accompanied by painting, photography, and illustrations, all of which were produced, edited, and arranged by students. It was an eclectic mix of different viewpoints and opinions. After a successful launch party that showcased the writers and artists featured in the magazine (as well as local bands and musicians), the magazine established a presence on campus and in the community.

Despite this success, an attempt to obtain funding from the UC fell short by a narrow margin leaving the 'zine in a sticky financial situation. It is important that the students and residents of Isla Vista have an avenue for expressing themselves creatively in a physical format as well as digital. Unfortunately, printing costs are high and the magazine's creators are students and residents without enough cash to foot the expenses.

Now this is where you come in.

We're asking for donations of any size so that we will be able to print the second issue of the magazine and keep it free of charge.

The submissions process has already been completed and the selections for the Spring issue have already been made. Editing and Layout are being finished at this very moment. For all intents and purposes the issue will be completed with nothing but a copious amount of time spent. We require funding only to put out a physical copy worthy of the amount of time and energy that has gone into it.

The first issue was a smashing success and we want to keep building on the momentum we've established. If we do not reach our goal, we will still use the money to release a more financially feasible, scaled-down version of the Spring edition. We appreciate your time and any donations. Please spread the word and help support student art and culture.
