BENEFITING: Independent Diplomat
Independent Diplomat (ID) works to amplify the voices of the most marginalized and vulnerable in the corridors of power. Through disruptive diplomacy, ID empowers the least-resourced diplomatic actors to pry open the closed doors of international negotiations and advocate their interests. When those with the most at stake are not included during international discussions that will determine their futures, the result is predictable—agreements reached without the input of all relevant parties are less sustainable and all too often lead to the resumption of armed conflict.
By helping to level the diplomatic playing field, ID contributes to negotiated outcomes that are more just, equitable and sustainable.
For example, ID worked with the world’s newest country, South Sudan, to secure its independence and then negotiate full membership of the United Nations in record time, giving the country and its 10 million people greater access to international assistance and humanitarian protection under the UN Charter.
Likewise, ID works with the Republic of the Marshall Islands on its efforts to drive a more ambitious outcome in international climate change negotiations. ID has helped the Marshall Islands, where climate change has already arrived, to build momentum towards a new climate treaty.
These are just some of the groups that we work with. ID believes that everyone, not just the powerful, should have a seat at the table when their future is being discussed.
