BENEFITING: CALIFORNIA INDIAN ENVIRONMENTAL ALLIANCE
We are raising $20k for grassroots Indigenous organizing in the Bay Area. Indian People Organizing for Change (IPOC), is a group started almost 20 years ago by Corrina Gould and Johnella La Rose. They have been doing everything from protecting sacred sites like Sogorea Te’ and the West Berkeley Shellmound, to pushing elected officials to listen to Indian voices, to social services for Native people, to reviving cultural traditions. They have been a powerhouse of local organizing, but have never gotten the full funding they need and deserve to bring forward their amazing visions. We want to change that! Here is some of IPOC's powerful work over the last few years: *Led a spiritual encampment for 109 days to protect Sogorea Te, a burial site in Vallejo in danger of desecration. *Are currently leading the fight to save the West Berkeley Shellmound, a funerary site older than the pyramids, from the development of condos. *Helped revive the Intertribal Friendship House, a center of Indigenous community and culture in Oakland *Hosted for the last two years a salmon ceremony with the Winnemum Wintu to call salmon back to local rivers, a ceremony that hasn't happened in 200 years. Indian People Organizing for Change has inspiring visions for future work, like saving the West Berkeley Shellmound and creating an Ohlone park on the site; creating permanent markers of village and burial sites in the Bay Area so that they become common knowledge; uncovering creeks that currently run under concrete so that our neighborhoods are more connected to the land we are on, and so much more. Your donation will go towards making those visions possible. It's our responsibility, as people living on Ohlone land (now known as the Bay Area) to support this work. Please join us in donating.
