THE STORY:

Background:
The state of Roraima, in Northern Brazil, is home to over 40,000 indigenous people who seek to maintain their traditional ways of life despite growing development pressures. They are also seeking ways to generate income for their families and communities in environmentally sustainable ways.

Indigenous women are often at the head of sustainable development initiatives, given their attachment to their land, culture and families. Indigenous women in the region have formed The Organization of Indigenous Women of Roraima to focus on promoting the role of women in their communities. The small organization now serves indigenous women throughout the region.

Problem:
Continual development pressures on indigenous communities in Roraima have made it increasingly difficult for indigenous women in Roraima to maintain their traditional ways of life. There is a need for sustainable and culturally appropriate income generating opportunities for women and their families.

What we are raising money for:
To help the Organization of Indigenous Women of Roraima develop and market their traditional crafts as a way to strengthen community ties and cultural traditions in an environmentally sustainable manner. We are providing women with valuable skills needed for developing sustainable businesses, through workshops and hands-on training. We are also helping the leadership of their new non-profit organization to strengthen their administrative and financial skills to ensure the sustainability of their important work.

This project helps women generate income as well as empowers them to counter social problems their communities increasingly face, such as domestic violence and alcoholism.

Goal: To raise $40,000

Fact 1: Indigenous women in Roraima, as elsewhere in the Amazon, often spearhead community projects and lead efforts to preserve community and family traditions.

Fact 3: Over 50% of Roraima is demarcated indigenous lands, including the Yanomami Area (37,000 sq miles) and Raposa Serra do Sol (6,500 sq miles).

Fact 4: Organization of Indigenous Women of Roraima was founded in 1999 and it is the only indigenous women’s organization in Roraima.
