Please help me support UMSI’s Alternative Spring Break community service program!
As you may already know, I am currently in my second semester of the University of Michigan’s School of Information studying Archives and Records Management and Preservation of Information. I am passionate about libraries and archives and the important educational role that they play in local, national and global communities.
One of the reasons I came to UMSI was the fantastic practical-experience opportunities that the school provides to prepare us for our careers. The Career Development Office is a team of incredibly dedicated individuals who, in addition to placing us in jobs and internships, run the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program. This week long internship program creates the opportunity for students to engage in a service-oriented learning experience in New York, Washington D.C., Chicago and Detroit. ASB connects UMSI students with non-profit, cultural, governmental, and K12 educational institutions through social impact projects and gives the organizations involved an opportunity to complete projects that that they would otherwise be unable to complete.
The ASB program is expensive to run and even with the small participatory donation required by participants, the costs are far from covered. This is why I need YOUR HELP to support this amazing program that helps UMSI students gain professional experience while contributing to non-profit organizations. By helping to raise this money, it will ensure that programs like this will thrive in the future, enabling students like us to continue to help the community during ASB and beyond.
My ASB. Over the first week of March, I will be in Washington D.C. working at the Library of Congress’ Prints and Photographs Division helping apply relevant subject headings to historic news photographs from the first third of the 20th century. Tagging these photographs with appropriate subject-headings will make these images more accessible to students, teachers, and researchers.
By contributing to my ASB fundraising effort, you will help me…
- Gain invaluable hands-on professional experience at one of the most important and influential photo archives in the country.
- Learn the ins-and-outs of Library of Congress Subject Headings, an important tool used by archives nationwide to catalog archival materials.
- Make important professional contacts at governmental archives that will help me advance my career.
- Learn about the archive community and network in Washington D.C.
- And… most importantly, volunteer at and contribute to an important organization that contributes to the larger goals of information access and literacy.
My Goal is to raise only $500 to help run the ASB program and support the other programs run by the Career Development Office.
Every little bit helps. I know that this is a difficult time financially for many people but any small donation you can make will go a long way to helping me reach my goal and give back to the UMSI program.
A plus. This is a 501(c)3, 100% tax deductible donation!
Thanks so much for all your help!
