THE STORY:

Hi friends, family, fellow runners, and all others that have arrived at my fundraising page! This year I will be running (along with Shaina) the New York City Marathon on November 6th.  This will be my 11th marathon and my first raising funds for a cause.   Here's my story on why I'm raising funds for Inheritance of Hope.

When choosing to fundraise for a race (especially the world's largest marathon) you quickly realize there are many organizations to choose from (as in hundreds of charities).  With so many to choose from, I came up with the following criteria that led me to Inheritance of Hope:

  • The organization had touched Northeast Ohio
  • The organization was smaller in scale where the funds raised could have a greater impact
  • The organization was recognized for making sure donations received went to those in need
  • I felt a connection to the organization's mission

Many of the organizations I reviewed aligned with the first three criteria, and in this case Inheritance of Hope met these as the organization has helped and continues to help families hear in Northeast Ohio, they are smaller in size (<$1MM in annual donations), and they have been recognized as a GuideStar Exchange “Gold” Participant.

The final criteria was one that I struggled with, but as I came across the mission of IoH I definitely felt the connection I sought.  IoH’s purpose is to support young families facing the loss of a parent due to a terminal illness, and for a couple reasons it just hit home for me.

First, as a new father I can’t imagine the difficulty a child and family faces when a parent is lost to a terminal illness (1 in every 20 children will lose a parent before the age of 15).  Imagining a life without my wife or Mallory without a Mom or Dad is unimaginable.  Knowing I’m supporting families and children facing this reality is something I could put my heart behind.

Second, I could never have imagined losing my mother or father or sibling as I grew up.  As many of you know, I did lose my father when I was 25 and learned of his passing at about mile 12 of my first marathon (yes I finished after pulling myself together), and even though I was 25 the difficulty of losing him was overwhelming.  When I run, my Dad’s spirit is always on display (the word “can’t” was not in his vocabulary), and he would be proud to support IoH.

So, that’s my fundraising story.  If you know of a family has been impacted by a terminal illness or you find this cause worthy of your support, please consider a small donation.  In return, I guarantee that Shaina and I will run with every ounce of effort we have on November 6th.

Thank you for your support!
