BENEFITING: GEORGE RODRIGUE FOUNDATION INC
EVENT DATE: Dec 20, 2014
In December 2009, my cousin Judy and I teamed up to run the Ol' Man River Half Marathon in honor of our cousin Craig who had recently died from colon cancer, and for our Aunt Kathy who was living with ovarian cancer. Together we raised over $2000 for the American Cancer Society. It was a fantastic day. Our family came out to watch us run through and around New Orleans City Park, and my brother-in-law, George Rodrigue, took us out for a victory brunch after. Little did we know how much would change over the coming years...
In May of 2012, George was diagnosed with cancer. In March of 2013, our Aunt Kathy died. On December 14, 2013, we lost George, and our hearts were broken.
George did many things in his life, but one of his greatest accomplishments was collaborating with his son Jacques to form the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts (GRFA). This nonprofit organization provides scholarships to Louisiana high school seniors through its annual art contest. Working in collaboration with Louisiana A+ Schools, GRFA is helping to promote arts integration in Louisiana's classrooms. George's Art Closet provides supplies and/or funds to purchase supplies, for Louisiana art teachers and schools whose funding does not otherwise allow for the expense.
Most of all, George was a loving husband, father, uncle, brother and friend.
I run in his honor, and in loving memory.
