Dear Friends & Family,
On October 7, 2014, my father Luke passed away after a 6 year battle with metastatic salivary gland cancer. He fought bravely and never gave up hope, speaking glowingly about the future even in his final days.
He was a family man in every sense of the word, always putting his wife and two sons first. When my older brother Ryan was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, my father dedicated every minute of his time and every ounce of his energy to helping Ryan get better. Sadly, Ryan lost his battle with cancer in 2008 and my father was diagnosed later that year.
Cancer has had a devestating impact on our family, but we are not alone: 1 in 2 men will develop cancer during their lifetimes as will 1 in 3 women. Nearly everyone has a family member or friend that has been impacted by the disease. Progress towards a cure has been uninspiring for some time, but now, for the first time in history, we can imagine stopping cancer in its tracks.
Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) is a groundbreaking initiative created to accelerate innovative cancer research that will get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now. SU2C is bringing together the best and the brightest researchers and encouraging collaboration instead of competition among the entire cancer community. My father was studious by nature and an avid reader. He served as his own advocate conducting exhaustive research into his disease and seeking out existing and experimental forms of treatment being offered around the world. He firmly believed that novel breakthroughs were not just on the horizon, but imminent and that an innovative approach to research that was less rigid, less bureacratic and more innovative than what has existed to date could deliver remarkable results. SU2C champions such an approach and he applauded their efforts and admired their work greatly.
In memory of my father Luke and in recognition of his admirable and courageous struggle against cancer, my mother Lynda and I are making a donation to SU2C. We hope you'll stand with us and consider making a donation too.
