BENEFITING: Innocence Project
ORGANIZER: Innocence Project
EVENT: NYC Half 2014
EVENT DATE: Mar 16, 2014
On Sunday, March 16, I will be running for Team Innocence Project in the NYC Half Marathon to raise awareness about wrongful convictions and to fundraise to help free the innocent.
Many of you are aware of my work on behalf of Bill Kuenzel, who sits wrongly convicted on Death Row in Alabama (see: www.alabamainjustice.com). Painfully, there is no DNA evidence available to exonerate Bill because evidence has either gone missing or was suppressed or was inexplicably never collected by the authorities. Bill faces death even though he has never had a trial in which all of the relevant evidence was heard. We must continue to work to see that he does get that one fair trial.
The Innocence Project works to help exonerate the wrongly convicted through the use of DNA. The first DNA exoneration took place in 1989 - ironically, the very year that Bill Kuenzel was wrongly convicted. Since then:
312 People in the U.S. Have Been Exonerated by DNA - across 36 states and Washington, DC - including 18 on Death Row.
Furthermore, the true suspects and/or perpetrators have been identified in 152 (or 49%) of DNA exoneration cases.
Please help support me in this great cause. Beyond that, this run will be especially meaningful as I am running the race with my daughter, Ana, who is on Team Fresh Air Fund - part of her bat mitzvah service project to raise funds for inner-city kids to attend summer camps.
Thanks so much for your support.
