#Inspired2GiveBack: * Hunger * Homelessness * Health *
Organized by: Raymond Norman
UPDATE 1/7/16: I recently became aware that I will have to relocate by March 1st, 2016. Due to changes in my healthcare, I can no stay in my current apartment. I am asking for assistance with moving expenses via bit.ly/4Ray2Move.
I am inspired to give back because many, many people were kind enough to offer me aid, assistance and encouragement when I was in the worst place of my life.
My goal is to establish and sustain a fund that can be used to help others that find themselves in "The Social Gap". Families and individuals that are on the verge of homelessness because they can't afford to pay a month of rent, or can't move because they can't come up with first month's rent. Families that, with help with just one month's worth of groceries or gas, can find some relief from the fund. Those that need help with transportation to see the doctor or dentist, maybe with medication. Families that lack the ability to cover $300 worth of auto repairs and have had their lives turn into chaos without a vehicle. My goal is to see the fund help people/families that are at or on the verge of crisis or emergency. I hope to fill a small part of The Social Gap that I found myself in during recent times. To effectively distribute funds, I have a couple people to help with decision-making process.
After I became disabled & unable to work in 2009, my life began to slowly unravel. By the time I had my second hip replacement surgery in 2010 I had lost everything. I had no savings, no income & the outlook was dim. I stayed with a friend during the year it took me to get back to "full" strength. I became eligible for Social Security & was able to get an apartment. It wasn't long, though, and the expenses were so high that I was running out of funds halfway into the month and the home I was living in went up for sale. I had to move. However, I couldn't without the ability to establish a savings or even pay a full month of bills, I had no place to go. I couldn't come up with first month's rent & didn't find any assistance from government or private agencies due to the fact I had income. I felt like I was left alone. I moved around from place to place & stayed in my truck for a few months.
During that time, I communicated on Twitter & organized my own personal fundraising page. Hundreds of people stepped up to help me. The generosity shown to me was overwhelming, not just from a dollar standpoint, but from the amount of care, kindness, love & spirit I received.
Today, I am coming out of what I call "The Social Gap" and happy to be in a new apartment. All thanks to the assistance I received from strangers, and some friends, that were willing to help me. Now, it's my turn to give back.
I feel this is the ideal time for me to give back while I can also help many, many people. I understand the ache in the stomach of the person who faces certain crisis & I want to help. Also, since I am unable to work ( I also have a traumatic brain injury ), I have the time to give and the willingness to accept the challenge. In fact, I'm truly looking forward to the challenge, experience & to the first time we can help someone in need. My next calling, I believe.
Please assist with a gift to my fund. In giving, you allow me the ability to help others. I would be personally grateful and I know countless others will be too. Thanks for your consideration.
