Inspiring Underprivileged Students
Organized by: Lucy Flores
My name is Lucy. I am a high school student raising money to inspire other middle and high school students in underprivileged areas of St. Louis and surrounding areas. The money I raise would be to buy the book "How to Make A Spaceship: A Band of Renegades, an Epic Race, and the Birth of Private Spaceflight". The book, written by Julian Guthrie, is about how traveling to space went from being a government-dominated field to being something that anyone with passion that is willing to work hard can do. I want to raise funds for this book because I want to give others the inspiration that I experienced. In middle school, I read two life changing books, "The Singularity Is Near" by Ray Kurzweil and "Bold" by Peter Diamandis. It made me realize that anyone can make an impact in this world, no matter your age. Kurzweil and Diamandis are co-founders of Singularity University. Its motto is "How will you positively impact billions of lives?" The presale price is $20. After September 20th the price increases to $30. I want to buy as many books as possible but I put $25,000 as my goal which will purchase around 1000 books for the students. In addition, Peter Diamandis and Julian Guthrie are hosting a contest to help promote the book. For every book someone sells another will be donated to a high school student participating in FIRST robotics. If I were to sell the most books I would have the incredible opportunity to spend the day with Diamandis, Fly Zero-G, and fly with Mike Melvill, the world's first commercial astronaut, in his homebuilt plane. The challenge ends on October 5th. Thank you so much. Please help and send this link to as many people as possible. Help spread the word!
