BENEFITING: BRANCH OF NASHVILLE INC
Did you know that one in 10 people in Nashville, Tennessee, were born outside of the United States? The Branch of Nashville is a food pantry and education resource center located in Antioch, a suburb of Nashville, which has the fastest-growing immigrant population in Middle Tennessee. Despite that, this area is known as an “ESL desert”. English Every Day, our new Intensive English program for immigrants is an oasis to this community! You can help us fund this much-needed program!
Who will English Every Day Serve?
Immigrants like Hanan sit at home all day, virtually a prisoner in the four walls of her dark apartment. She and her family came here from Egypt after the police raped her in front of her family. Hanan only speaks Arabic. She is frightened, so she stays in her apartment all day while her husband works and her children are in school. The highlight of her week is going to The Branch of Nashville food pantry to get food for her family.
Like Hanan, many immigrants and refugees do not speak English when they arrive. At the Branch we want to help immigrants by giving them more than food or even traditional ESL classes. We want to bring viable solutions to the need for intensive English language learning to this population with English Every Day.
English Every Day is our Answer
That is why we are offering English Every Day this fall. In this intensive English program we will immerse our students into learning English for 3 months, 5 days a week, 4 hours per day. This amounts to 240 hours of English learning that provides the ability to speak everyday English, communicate with school officials, medical professionals, and apply for jobs. The typical English language learner is receiving 2- 4 hours of instruction per week. This takes over a year to complete what can be done in three, intense months.
How Will English Every Day Help?
After graduation, the student will immediately go into a Jobs for Life class Jobs for Life class to help them find employment. Then students like Hana can take care of herself, her family, and be an active member in our community. This program is unique as we are only charging our students $1 per hour, or $240 total. Most programs like this are found at Community Colleges or Universities at a cost that is often prohibitive for many immigrants. This will help immigrants climb the ladder of success instead of living in the endless cycle of poverty and unemployment or underemployment.
We Need Your Help!
To pay for an ESL instructor and to buy materials and technology for the class this fall, we need funding! We have students ready to attend class in September. Help us make this a reality for them!
Our Gift To You:
When you donate $240 dollars (that is $1 an hour for 240 hours of classtime for an immigrant to learn English) we will send you a photo and thank-you note from the student you helped!
And when you donate $1000 we will put your name as a sponsor on our graduation program and give you an invitation to attend a special dinner with our students after graduation!
With your help, The Branch will be able to give Hanan and other immigrants an oasis and a voice in a new language that will help them grow hope in our ever-increasing, diverse community!
