THE STORY:

Lis Key wrote -

Help us rescue and care for orangutan babies like Budi!

For the first year of his life Budi the baby orangutan was kept in a chicken cage. His owner fed him entirely on condensed milk, a diet that was slowly killing him. By the time he was handed over to International Animal Rescue’s team in West Borneo his body was bloated with fluid from malnutrition and his limbs were swollen and bent. Budi couldn’t move or sit up on his own. At a year old he should have been strong enough to climb and swing: instead he was as helpless as a new born baby.

When our team lifted Budi out of his cage to move him to the rescue centre his eyes filled with tears and he cried in agony. It was heartbreaking to see how much pain he was in.

But once Budi was in the care of IAR’s orangutan centre and his life was no longer in danger he started to make a gradual recovery.

When his limbs were no longer swollen and sore, Budi was encouraged to start moving and using them.  Soon he was sitting up and holding a bottle. At first he couldn’t swallow solid food but gradually he learnt to chew and eat pieces of fruit. Within weeks he was walking with assistance from the vets and climbing in his hammock to reach treats hung up to encourage him.

Budi continues to make steady progress. He recently made his first friend - Jemmi, another baby orangutan of less than a year old. Now the two are best buddies.

Soon they will both be introduced to other orphaned infants in IAR’s Baby School.  Every one of these babies has been taken from the wild and sold as a pet. Some have permanent injuries from the day they were snatched from their mothers: Rickina bears the scar of a machete on her forehead, Dio has a bullet lodged behind his left eye. They are all depending on us for food, shelter - and their eventual freedom.

We have more than 80 orangutans in our care and there are many others desperately in need of our help. At International Animal Rescue we rely entirely on public donations to fund our work. Please help us rescue and care for more babies like Budi. Your support will help Budi and his friends continue on the long road to recovery and enable us to help hundreds more like them. They simply won’t survive without us!

Thank you.
