As a bright 15 year’s old, Logan Brendan’s life was dramatically altered when he was involved in a car accident that permanently injured his spinal cortex. The consequence of this injury is that for the last 18 years, Logan has been confined to a wheelchair – unable to speak. His only means of communication have been through blinking his eyes.

Last year, Logan’s disability advocates stumbled across a company called DynaVox Inc., which provides a voice to people with speech and physical disabilities. Logan’s team wondered if the company’s eye recognition technology (EyeMax), which allows users to make their thoughts known through eye movement, could help Logan communicate with the world around him. DynaVox offered Logan a 2 month free trial of their product.

The machine was a life-changer and for the first time in 18 years, allowed Logan to express his thoughts and desires. It allowed him to fully connect with those around him. It allowed Logan to exert some level of control over his life. Simple things from “Could I have more salt please?”, to “Can’t we do this physical therapy after lunch instead?”.

After the 2 month trial ended, the machine had to be returned - leaving Logan physically silenced. However, nothing could silence Logan’s spirit or optimism. He always has a mischievous sparkle in his eye and has formed friendships and connections with his caregivers and fellow patients. Logan has lived for nearly 2 decodes without any hope of verbally connecting with others, but that has never stopped him from connecting in his own way.

Logan's family and advocacy team would like to provide him with a permanent DynaVox machine so that he can verbally express himself. The cost of the machine is $30,000 - way beyond anything his mother could afford. His family and friends, have already donated $5,000, which leaves a shortfall of $25,000 to provide him with a permanent machine.

Please donate what you can to help Logan share his voice and spirit with the those around him.
