We work with foster homes and childcare organizations to strengthen their structure, operations, and fundraising to help them reach operational and financial sustainability. We also work with the South African Department of Social Development, Department of Human Settlements, and various local and international charities and businesses to create meaningful partnerships that leverage these different resources to maximize impact.

Our current project is with a Home of Safety that is home to 30 children in Khayelitsha, one of South Africa’s largest townships. Nick Grava began volunteering at the organization in 2012 and has served as its Managing Director since 2013.

There are an estimated 3.7 million orphans in South Africa, about half of whom have lost one or both parents to AIDS [1]. South Africa has the largest HIV infected population in the world at 6 million, representing approximately 17.9% of the population [2]. Additionally, within the township of Khayelitsha (population estimated between 1 and 2 million), the unemployment rate is roughly 40%, with 55% of the population living in informal shack housing [3].

From these social issues, a generation of parentless children has emerged that cannot raise themselves and do not have the basic tools they need to live safely and reach success. The South African government has designated various forms of foster care to take responsibility for these children, but these organizations often lack the resources and leadership they need to be effective and sustainable.

Our goal is to work from within these foster care facilities to improve their operations and help strengthen them, both as effective social organizations and caring homes to these children.
