THE STORY:

We, two Iowans, plan to climb Mount Everest – the tallest mountain in the world – in hopes of becoming the first team of Iowans in the history of the world to summit via the North Ridge. We are doing this climb for two distinct reasons: 1) to raise awareness of and take tangible steps to alleviate post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); and 2) because we love the mountains and Everest is the pinnacle of mountaineering. Through this climb, we aim to not only raise awareness for veterans with PTSD, but also actively engage with veterans who are most at risk for PTSD. It is important to us that we help with PTSD awareness as well as help people learn how to deal with PTSD in a healthy manner. Taking a non-medicated, holistic approach to wellness, we will use the network we develop before, during, and after our climb to help veterans and their families hike, rock climb, bike, and snowshoe as a healthy way to deal with the stress and challenges presented in life after deployment. We have planned several hiking, snowshoeing, and climbing trips for veterans as part of our Everest training program (email us at iowansforeverest@gmail.com for a list of events). Through our Everest climb, we hope to take tangible actions toward mitigating PTSD among veterans. Who is on the Everest climbing team? We are just two guys from Iowa that like to get out and have fun in the alpine world. A fun fact about us is that we just happen to have identical names: John Robert Anderson III. We don’t just happen to have the same name, we are also cousins. Luckily, one of us goes by John while the other goes by Andy. John Anderson is from Minburn, Iowa and grew up in Dallas Center, Iowa. He has dedicated his life to his family, his country, and his love of the mountains. John is a Chief Warrant Officer in the United States Army. Following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, he enlisted in the Army at the age of 17. He has served multiple tours in Afghanistan and other places throughout the world. He is married to Leslie Anderson and has four children. John loves the mountains and spends most of his non-working time in the mountains, reading about the mountains, or preparing for his next trip to the mountains. He has climbed many large mountains, as well as many technical rock and ice climbing routes throughout the US and the world including Denali, Mount Rainier, Grand Teton and many summits of Devil’s Tower. He is a certified climbing guide and has worked as climbing instructor. John leads by example to inspire people to get out, have adventures, and explore. The other cousin, John “Andy” Anderson, is from Boone, Iowa and currently lives in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Andy’s father is a retired Army officer who served in several countries throughout his career, including Afghanistan. Andy’s undergraduate Degree is from University of Northern Iowa, his master’s degree is from Lancaster University (United Kingdom) and his PhD is from Durham University (United Kingdom). Andy has dedicated his life to education. He is currently an Assistant Professor in UNI’s College of Business in the area of Supply Chain Management. After graduating from UNI, Andy lived for several years in both China and England. He speaks Mandarin Chinese fluently. Andy is also an avid adventurer. He has ridden his bicycle across the US twice, climbed many tall and difficult mountains such as Denali, Matterhorn, Mount Elbrus, and most of Colorado’s 14ers, and has run several marathons. He is happily married to Yi Cheng, with whom he has one son and another on the way. We aim to do something amazing: become the first all-Iowan team to climb the north side of Everest at the same time as making the world a better place through the alleviation of PTSD among veterans. Please, help support our goal of engaging veterans with healthy, sustainable ways of dealing with PTSD and our dream of climbing the big one – Mount Everest! If you have questions about the PTSD-hiking, climbing, and snowshoeing events scheduled for veterans and their families, please, contact us at iowansforeverest@gmail.com
