My name is Carissa Wilson and I am organizing the Irene Holbrook Memorial Scholarship to honor my grandmother, an incredible woman with a tremendous passion for education who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. The scholarship will benefit a high school student in Richland County in Columbia, South Carolina to help finance their pursuit of a college education in business.

Though not formally educated beyond the high school level, Irene continues to be one of the most intelligent women I have ever known. Her hard work and dedication enabled each of her children to become first generation collegians. She has also invested in the educations of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

At over 80 years of age, before being diagnosed with an inoperable tumor in her lung, Irene took the initiative to obtain her GED, once again demonstrating her belief in the value of education and goal achievement. For me, Irene has been an essential source of academic and career motivation who has tracked my personal progress with enthusiasm. This has been especially true since I began attending “the real USC,” the University of South Carolina.

I can think of no better way to commemorate Irene’s life than through the creation of a scholarship to help other young students pursue excellence in education.
