Hej.
Hi - I am trying to raise money for "my" student Irene at Daraja Academy in Kenya. I visited Daraja in January/February 2010 and I fell in love with the place, the students, the founders and the country! Give Irene and her 76 sisters a hand!
Irene is just over 4 feet tall with a personality that is 8 feet tall. She’s fast in the 100 meter dash, and a quick learner in the classroom. She has an ability to “dig deep” as she puts it and focus. Irene is the oldest of 7 children. When she was in primary school, Irene had to overcome her fear of the other students and embrace their differences. She focused on her education and her goals. A few days before Irene went to take her 8th grade exam, her father was in a terrible road accident that put him in a Nairobi hospital for several months. Even though the family was in an upheaval, again she focused on what was ahead of her and performed very well. Unfortunately due to her father, the sole breadwinner of the family, being in the hospital, there was no money to go to secondary school. Irene again refocused and repeated her 8th grade year, scoring even higher on her 8th grade exam than the previous year.
