Before I was born, my mother’s sister, Barbara, died at age 26 after a battle with lymphoma. In her honor, on November 2, I will compete in Ironman Florida, a 140.6-mile race consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile run, as part of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) PowerTeam.

Multiple myeloma is an incurable blood cancer with one of the lowest five-year relative survival rates of all cancers. The disease is also one of the most expensive types of cancer to treat, with medication alone often surpassing $5,000 in annual, out-of-pocket expenses.

Although multiple myeloma and lymphoma are distinct, research into each of these blood cancers often benefits efforts to cure the other. This will be the fifth race I have entered to raise money for blood cancer research in Barbara’s memory.

Since 1998, the MMRF has raised more than $225 million and, with 90% of the Foundation’s total budget going directly towards research and related programming, the Foundation is consistently recognized in the top 1% of all charities reviewed by evaluators. Through its research, the MMRF contributed to the FDA approval of six drugs for multiple myeloma in just four years – a track record unparalleled in oncology. These same drugs are now being explored as potential treatments for more than 30 other cancers.

Please support my participation in Ironman Florida benefiting the MMRF. I hope to raise $20,000, and I need your help to get there. Contribute as you are able - every dollar counts and will be appreciated greatly.
