140.6 For Steve -
Ironman Arizona is going to be my first full Ironman Triathlon and I am 100% inspired by both of my Ironman parents. In 2010, my parents, Steve and Julene, crossed the finish line of Ironman Arizona together holding hands. That exact moment is when I realized, one day, I will cross that finish line as well! A couple months after returning home from their race, my mom found out that she had a very aggressive Uterine Cancer. Instead of letting cancer win, my IronMom decided to do the unthinkable and sign up for ANOTHER Ironman, Ironman Canada. A couple of months after my mother completed Ironman Canada and was done with chemo treatments, my father was diagnosed with a stage 4 Stomach/Esophageal Cancer. The doctors told my father that he had less than a year left to live. Instead of letting that bring him down, he decided to do the exact opposite. He continued to swim, bike and run! My father completed the ½ marathon portion of the Boise 70.3 relay in June (has done Boise 70.3 all 6 years that it has been in Boise) and then went on to complete the Ironman Boulder 70.3 last August, while going through chemo every two weeks. My IronDad has taught me that positive thinking and believing are the body’s strongest tools. He calls everyone’s positive thoughts, prayers and belief his "X-Factor", and it is what is keeping him alive and competing! It has been well over a year and he is doing great! On November 16, 2014, I will do 140.6 miles for my dad Steve, and become an Ironman!
I want to raise awareness for Stomach Cancer, therefore I am racing to raise funds for Debbie's Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer. http://www.debbiesdream.org/portal/ This is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about stomach cancer, advancing funding for research, and providing education and support internationally to patients, families, and caregivers. My dad, Steve Andrews, is the Founder of the Idaho Chapter. Thank you so much for your support and tax deductable donation!
My Goals for IMAZ 2014 are...
- To finish the race for myself, my dad Steve, and to become an Ironman!
- To finish with a Smile!!
- To raise at least $5,000 for Debbie's Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer.
