THE STORY:

Mallory Nieman wrote -

So, here's our 'little' challenge:  coming up in June, we will be in Klagenfurt, Austria attempting to finish a full Ironman distance triathlon. We'd like to add another element to the race and raise money for a charity we hold dear... and this part of the challenge would directly involve you.

Our choice of charity is giving to cancer research and patient support. To us it's amazing how truly modern 'modern medicine' is, but the disease is immensely challenging and still eluding scientific efforts. And from our personal experiences, we know very much the importance of prevention, treatment, support and ultimately a cure. Surely, we all have our stories to share related to cancer, from our immediate family to our extended family & friendship circles. Thus, with you helping our efforts, we want to take the opportunity to do that little bit more... for all of us.

Please, this is completely voluntary and there's zero pressure. If you're open to our "charity challenge" for cancer research and patient support, you're welcome to choose your own charity -- please let us know which organization you support and why. We would love your support to further cheer us on from afar and through each mile. You will find more information below on the race and how we plan to make a small difference via the American Cancer Association. So, with that...

What is an Ironman?

An Ironman is a long course triathlon consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run (140.6 miles / 226 Kilometers total) completed in succession, all within a maximum time allowance of 16 hours. It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world.

Why the American Cancer Association?

Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the US, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths. There is still no cure for many types of cancers, and treatment is oftentimes difficult and costly for patients and their families. However, we know that healthy behaviors can significantly reduce risk, and headway is being made in many fields of treatment. The American Cancer Association saves lives and creates a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, assisting about 11 million people in America who have had cancer, and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.

What you can do to help!

It is our hope that you will find this a worthy cause to donate to, and no donation is too small. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your continued love and support.
