BENEFITING: LAZAREX CANCER FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: LAZAREX CANCER FOUNDATION
EVENT: Team for Life | IRONMAN 2016
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
When I first decided that I was crazy enough to register for the 2016 Louisville Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run), I knew I wanted to compete for a cause. As a cancer researcher and aspiring oncologist, it was obvious that I would prefer to fundraise for a cancer organization. While scrolling through the list of Ironman's charity partners, I stumbled upon the Lazarex Cancer Foundation. Their mission really stood out to me, and I knew I wanted to be a part of the "Team for Life".
Lazarex is one of the most unique cancer foundations I have seen. I like the mission behind the organization because it has a profound effect on cancer patients immediately. Lazarex provides financial support to cancer patients (patients who have been told they have no other options) for FDA clinical trial participation, identification of clinical trial options, community outreach and education. Your donation will have a direct effect on patients currently struggling with cancer -
"Lazarex Cancer Foundation President, Dana Dornsife, first became involved in cancer patient advocacy in 2003 when her brother-in-law, Mike Miller, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Mike and his wife Erin had three children, the youngest of whom was only four years old. Dana searched for options for Mike that would give their family some additional time together and found a clinical trial. Mike participated in the clinical trial, responded well and lived long enough to help his sons prepare for their future and for his daughter to remember him.
Since then, Dana has fought tirelessly for patient advocacy and the expansion of available resources on behalf of those cancer patients who have been told they have run out of medical options and there is no hope left. In 2006 she founded Lazarex Cancer Foundation."
The stories and reviews I have read on the internet about Lazarex and truly inspiring. There aren't treatments for many advanced cancers, but Lazarex has clearly made a large difference in the lives of patients and their families. It give them hope; it gives them a chance to continue their journey in life. No other foundation helps patients and families affected by cancer in such a direct way.
In 2015 alone, Lazarex provided financial support to over 400 patients with advanced-stage cancer. To date, Lazarex patients have cumulatively lived an additional 507 years through their participation in clinical trials AFTER they were told that there were no other options.
