BENEFITING: Mattoon Area P.A.D.S (Public Action to Deliver Shelter)
ORGANIZER: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
EVENT: Your Journey Your Cause 2017
Going into this, my fourth, season racing triathlon I had privately decided it was time to make a run at a long course IRONMAN event. It took me a few weeks of pondering on how I was going to convince my wife to get on board with this plan. I had casually mentioned my desire to conquer this distance a few times through last season just to get a feel for where she was at with the idea. With her awareness of the monetary cost as well as the time comittment for training, the idea didn't get much traction. When you add our two kids into the mix and the busy life that comes with all that I can't say that I didn't share her same feelings. So I would put the thought away for awhile, but it wouldn't take long before it would come back.
Come March of this year I finally worked up the nerve to make a serious pitch to get her approval. I began by saying I really wanted to do at least one IRONMAN in this life and I would really like to do it before age starts to take it's toll. I voluteered to forgo any other races this season to save the money for this one. I also had a schedule worked out to where the early morning training wouldn't affect our family life that much... other than that long ride on Saturday. To my surprise I didn't get a reluctant OK but rather a supportive "I think you should do it". I can't thank her and my kids enough for making this possible. We are coming to Louisville on October 15th.
When I finally decided to pull the trigger on forking over the entry fee for the race that's when I learned about the IRONMAN Foundation and their Your Journey Your Cause program. At that moment I knew I had to take part in this. This is how I can make my family’s sacrifices over the next few months mean something more. This is how I can use the talents God blessed me with to make a difference.
The charity I am raising money for is the homeless shelter in my hometown of Mattoon, IL. The shelter is called Mattoon area P.A.D.S. (Public Action to Deliver Shelter). To take an exerpt from their website P.A.D.S. "provides safe and hospitable shelter, supportive services, and advocacy in order to assist homeless or at risk individuals and families to achieve a higher level of self sufficiency". In addition to shelter their kitchen provides 3 meals a day to anyone in need.
For the last couple years P.A.D.S has been going through quite the struggle to come up with the funds, and find a location the community could agree on, to build a new shelter. One visit to their current facility and you will see that it is grossly inadequate to support their mission. The good news is that through the generosity of a individual in the community the shelter received a donation of some land to build the new shelter on. Through further generosity of local businesses, religious groups and other individuals they have raised enough money to break ground on the building. So things are definately starting to go in the right direction.
While things are looking up for P.A.D.S they still estimate they need $90,000 to furnish and equip the new facility. As you can imagine, aside from opening the new facility, an organization such as this can continuously benefit from the generosity of others just to help with day to day operations.
I know the good lord has given me many blessings in this life that I thank him for every day. If you happen to have the good fortune of reading this on your Iphone or some other device while relaxing on your couch watching TV I am sure he has blessed you too. I hope you will consider helping those currently not as fortunate by making a donation.
P.S. I’m running a promotion for donors where you have the chance to win a sweet prize. To get the details check out my BLOG at jackofalltrades411.wordpress.com. It’ll be worth your time so do it.
