Recovery is Possible!
Team-Bri raises awareness and funds for the National Alliance on Mental Illness California (NAMI-CA) specifically to support NAMI-CA’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program with the California Highway Patrol and other public safety agencies. The CIT program works with law enforcement and provides education, training and assistance to aid officers in a situation when they encounter a person experiencing a mental health crisis.
Due to Team-Bri's efforts, NAMI-CA has trained 156 CHP officers, sergeants, lieutenants and captains from all over California as a part of the CHP train the trainer course. The class that NAMI-CA partners with CHP in provides instructors advanced crisis intervention behavioral health training in order to provide the officers who face the challenges of a person experiences a mental health crisis with multiple conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
Team-Bri is named after Brian Lungren, Jr., our friend and family member who grew up in Squaw Valley/Lake Tahoe California an exceptional athlete, freeskier, mountain biker, surfer, soccer and baseball player, and overall all-star competitor. His talent landed him roles in ski-action films and coverage in snowsports publications at a young age.
In his teens, Bri experienced the onset of mental illness, which took him away from many of the sports and activities that made him so happy. Throughout that time, Bri encountered law enforcement on numerous occasions, but those encounters never resulted in harm to either Bri, or an officer.
Bri’s family credits the outcomes of those encounters with the willingness of those law enforcement officers to become familiar with Bri as an individual, with Bri’s family; and, familiar with identifying when a person is experiencing a mental health crisis.
Though he is not competing on the slopes anymore, Bri serves as the virtual Ironman coach for his father and sister, Alanna. At Bri’s urging, Brian Sr. and sister competed in the 2015 Ironman Lake Tahoe/Ironman Lake Tahoe 70.3 and raised nearly $40,000 for NAMI-California. Brian Sr. and Alanna are continuing this cause by competing in Ironman Vineman.
Contributions in Team-Bri’s name on behalf of NAMI-California are being raised through the Ironman Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Bri continues to receive treatment for mental illness in Northern California and he and his family believe that Recovery is Possible.
