BENEFITING: American Cancer Society
ORGANIZER: THE IRONMAN FOUNDATION
EVENT: YOUR JOURNEY, YOUR CAUSE
The challenge of completing an Ironman may be daunting. But, for me it's a passion for competition, fitness and well being that keeps me thirsty for more. At the end of a race, 13, 14 or 15 hours after it begins, the exhillaration of crossing the finish line evicerates all traces of pain or exhaustion. The joy of seeing family and friends waiting (and sometimes waiting and waiting) for me at the finish ALWAYS brings tears of joy and appreciation into my eyes and lifts my spirits to new heights. The sheer energy of the crowd proves that we can do anything if we put our minds and hearts to it.
With that same sense of appreciation, determination and love, I hope to do more than finish these events. With our combined efforts we can make a difference in a race that means so much more...the race to find a cure for cancer. Unlike the end of the ironman, way too many friends and family members end their race crossing the line into eternity rather than into the celebratory arms of their loved ones. They are taken too soon because their bodies turned against themselves, often without any known cause or provocation. Brilliant people are racing to find the cause and the cure for this wicked flaw in our physiology. I'd like to help them win that race!
My dream in Ironman is to race the World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. My best chance to do so is to complete 12 full Ironman races and to earn a spot through Ironman's legacy program. Another long shot to Kona is winning a lottery slot. That could happen any year, but probably won't. So, I'm planning for a long haul to Kona, but that also gives us lots of opportunities to race and raise money to fight cancer!
My dream in raising money for this fight is to raise $1,406 per race (an Ironman race covers 140.6 miles, so...) and at least $14,060 in total! That alone won't cure cancer, but it definitely will help!
As an added incentive, I am offering an all-expense paid trip to the top 10 fundraisers to join me, Lynn, Kier and Ally in Kona! We'll keep track of all the money you raise/donate to this cause over the course of my journey to Kona. I'll also credit $100 each to your total for every race of mine that you attend. For example, if someone raises/donates $100 for Ironman Wisconsin AND joins me there for the race, his/her total would be $200. You'll get triple the benefit: enjoy an amazing event, help a worthy cause and increase your chances for a trip to Hawaii!
Thank you very, very much for your support of this important cause! Thank you also for your amazing support while I'm racing. I can't adequately express how much it means to me! When I'm racing out on the course I'm praying for each of you - prayers of thanks and asking for God's blessings of grace for you. When you see me smiling through my grimace, that's His answer!
