The world lost one of the strongest, most creative and beautiful people I knew on May 15, 2013. This person was my cousin Danielle Lynn also affectionately known to many as "Smoxy". At just 20 years old Danielle was diagnosed with Stage four Glioblastoma (brain cancer). Despite the odds she fought long and hard through numerous surgeries, rounds of chemo and radiation. She survived seven years and did everything she could do to kick cancer's ass. Now that she is gone I feel that as her cousin and friend I must do what I can to continue her fight against cancer!
Cancer has claimed the lives of my cousin Danielle, my grandmother and has affected many other people that I know and love including my Dad, my stepmom, my mother-in-law, two of my aunts and a couple of friends. These people are fighting off or have already fought off cancer.
The fight is personal. We must do whatever we can to fight this disease! I will be running my first 50K ultramarathon on Saturday, November 9 in Peninsula. The race is called Bills Bad Ass 50K and I dedicate the race to all the badasses who have had to deal with cancer...especially Danielle.
Danielle was passionate about fighting cancer. She was very involved in the fight against cancer as a member of First Descents, a group that helps young cancer survivors to fulfill their dreams. Please help me by donating any amount to this charity! Together let's kick cancer's ass!
