We all remember the day, April 19, 1995. I was in Senior English. I was dating a boy who's dad happened to be in a meeting at the Murrah Building when this happened. His dad was already an amazing person in my mind, but as the weeks went on, I learned how strong, humble, and even more amazing he could be. He was on the 9th floor. They tied curtains together to get out to the fire trucks. He then WALKED back to his office miles away, where his wife was waiting for him...hoping..praying that he would be the next person to come out of that elevator (before the era of cell phones, remember). He took me in as a member of their family and I was privy to situations and experiences that I would not have had as a regular teenager. He never went on any talk shows, didn't shout out his story to the news media, and never aimed to make money off of his misfortune. He helped lead the way to bring the jurors to OKC, but you'd never know it, as he isn't one to flaunt himself out there as a "hero" or "leader"...he's just a really good guy.
This year, I am striving to complete the 26.2 miles. I have run the 5K, and the half marathon in Charlie's honor. This year, I want to cross the finish line with my "In Honor of Charlie" on my back just like always.
We all have stories, this is mine. I run to remember, and I run in honor of survivor Charlie.
